Prologue – Intercepted

I thank you for the letter you have sent me and I am planning on coming down to Switzerland in two weeks. As you know I work in the EUSDO and I have had many adventurous missions along the way with my companion, Lieutenant Scar. I would like to take a break from that life and come down to you. There are many things I would like to hear from you and even learn from you but I’m afraid I have a coded message that I need breaking. It has come from an old friend of Scar’s or old enemy should I say and I’m guessing that it is a threat from her. Yes I know who this person is because that was the only I could translate as that was in binary code. Her name is Froslass and she used to be friends with Scar but they have become bitter enemies. I have given you a copy of the coded message and I will come down with my interpretation of it and a plain copy of it, the original coded message is in the super-secure safe in the EUSDO headquarters in London. I will meet you soon...

The rest of the letter was smudged but the signature wasn’t. The signature wasn’t a name or even any form of writing, it was a picture. It looked like a paw print of Pokémon but it was unrecognisable and unlike any other Pokémon prints seen before. “Well at least with have found it.” Said a Mandibuzz as he turned to the Bisharp standing behind him. They were in a wasteland of pure white snow just beneath some of the alpine mountains. There was a helicopter wreck next to where they were standing and further down from them was another wreck of helicopter, where Umbreon, two Bisharps and a Murkrow. The helicopter further away from them all was still burning and suddenly exploded into a fireball. The whole place smelt of oil and burning metal. The snow around the wrecks was stained with dry blood and oil from the fuel tanks.

“Sir Umbreon, we have found it” shouted the Bisharp standing next to Mandibuzz.

“Let me see it please, Mandibuzz” Umbreon asked

“Here you go” Mandibuzz gave him the letter. “The signature is just a paw print but we can’t identify whose it is.”

“I shall find out, but we need to take this back to boss” he said back to him, although he knew exactly who the Pokémon was who wrote the letter. “Let’s get out of here”

Umbreon knew this Pokémon from his childhood and he will never forget that time. They both went to the same Pokémon School and were best friends at the time but they soon fell out and went their separate ways. He absolutely hated this Pokémon and wanted him to taken out of this world. This Pokémon was unique and powerful but his name was hated by many Pokémon working in this criminal group. This Pokémon had underestimated amounts of power but Umbreon knew exactly much how power he had. His name was Lucario.

Chapter 1 – Just another day

Lucario was sitting in the living room of Scar’s mansion drinking some orange juice from a carton. Scar’s mansion sat in the Lake District in England and looked across the mountains and lakes. The European Union Special Defence Organisation had many bases all over the European Union and the mansion was also one of their bases in Britain. It contained an airfield with some small hangers on the edges of the runway because Scar loved to fly aircraft and so did Lucario although he didn’t do it as often. Once Lucario had finished his carton of juice he walked away from the living room and down the corridor towards the sealed doors to the base. Before he said the password into the voice recognition system the front door opened and Scar and his girlfriend Hannah came through. They were laughing and giggling as the stumbled into the hallway and then they both sighed.

“What’s the matter with you two?” Lucario asked, as he looked from Scar to Hannah.

“Nothing we just went to watch a comedy at the cinema in town, something we haven’t got here” replied Scar. “I need to talk to you; I’ll be downstairs in a minute”

“Ok, I’ll meet you in your office” replied Lucario and he turned away towards the sealed door.

He walked quite quickly towards the door and said the password into the voice recognition system and then typed the code into the keypad, when it had swivelled round from inside the wall. Once through the door, he closed it behind him. The door looked wooden from inside the house but was actually made from half a foot thick of steel and was pretty heavy. There were three doors from this room all leading into the mansion and the forth was sealed with a card scanner. Lucario used his card and was allowed to pass into the lift and pressed the button for the office floor. The actual base was situated underground and perfectly hidden from view of aircraft flying overhead. The base also generated a signal that scrambled all incoming radio waves and radar signals, so the base was completely safe unless its location was found out by a person or Pokémon who was not in the EUSDO.

Lucario walked out of the lift and headed down towards his office, which was next to Scar’s. Scar was a lieutenant and also a weapons engineer. Lucario was trained as an engineer in communications and also weaponry because this base stored and built the most technologically advanced weaponry and communication systems in the EUSDO. He found some paperwork in his office and as he was reading through it he noticed Scar walking down the corridor.

“Scar what is this?” Lucario asked, as he showed Scar the paperwork.

“Ah that. Lucario they are letters from the secretary of defence saying he would like to visit us tomorrow” Scar replied

“It’s a bit short notice, don’t you think”

“Yes it is but I sent a letter back saying that he would have to get an unmarked EUSDO helicopter into the base for security reasons. You know how dangerous it would be if he came in his own helicopter and the usual small plane flew over.”

“What small plane?”

“You know the small plane that flies over.” Lucario gave him a confused look and he changed the subject. “Anyway that wasn’t what I was going to talk to you about. I wanted to know why you’re going to Switzerland, apart from to see your friend Gallade.”

“I suppose I better tell you then. I am actually going there to see whether Gallade can help us translate this coding from erm ... well ... your enemy.”

“Umbreon?”

“No we killed him when we destroyed the castle in Switzerland.”

“Frolass?”

“Yes Frolass, I think she is sending a threat but I want to make sure. I also know that it is in so many different codes that it is impossible to translate quickly without Gallade.”

“I fear you may be right but I would like you to leave after the secretary of defence has come and gone. You can tell me about your transport arrangements tomorrow. Tonight you can have dinner with me and Hannah.”

Scar walked out of Lucario’s office and left Lucario in there on his own. He sat down at his computer and typed in his password. He was arranging his transport to Switzerland. He was specifically going to Kandersteg where Gallade lived with his companion. He had been there before but after the troubles there the EUSDO built a base outside Bern, the capital of Switzerland. He was planning on taking the whole route under protection from the EUSDO because many Pokémon in Europe wanted him dead and hated the EUSDO. That was probably why the Secretary of Defence was coming over to this base. Once he had finished making his travel arrangements he walked out his office and towards the lift.

He came up into the mansion and entered the dining room from the steel door. He found Scar and Hannah sitting at a table in the middle of the room. They were both sitting at one end of the table with Scar at the head of the table and Hannah sitting to the right of him. Lucario walked round the table and sat down on the left of Scar facing Hannah. Hannah was wearing a red headband that had a bow in it. She was twenty and went to a university in Leeds and lived here in the holidays. She had fallen in love with Scar when they were both at school together 5 years ago. He had saved her life when she was nearly killed one school evening. Scar had obtained a large scar running down his face from his left eye to the bottom of his left cheek on this day. Unfortunately it was permanent and he has now got a red scar down his face from where a piece of wood slashed him.

“So how has your day been, Lucario?” Scar asked

“It has been fine and I was only checking out all the aircraft we have here and making sure the engineers were doing their job. How has your day been?” replied Lucario

“We have just been walking round the village below here and then we came back up here and flew over to Leeds where we watched a film at the cinema.” Replied Hannah

“Yes we did, actually could you run through your travel arrangements now if that is Ok” Scar said looking at Lucario
“OK, I was planning on taking the whole route under protection because you know how dangerous it is for us to walk around in our uniform.”

“That’s fine can you tell me exactly how you are going there?”

“Yes, because I’m going to Kandersteg I will need the protection. I am going to take a carrier helicopter down to Portsmouth with 8 to 10 soldiers and then take a hovercraft over to the EUSDO port in France. After that I am going to fly down to Bern in a carrier helicopter again and take some ground transport to Kandersteg. Hopefully that will keep me safe from any people who want to attack me.”

“You do know that Kandersteg is still a troubled place even though we now have a presence near it in Bern.”

“Yes I do know that.”

“I was just making sure, anyway I was going to tell you this earlier but me and Hannah are planning an engagement.”

“When were you planning this?”

“Well I’m going to take her out for dinner in evening after you have left and...” he turned to Lucario and whispered in his ear. “...propose”

“I shall try help with the planning when I get back, anyway aren’t you still going to be at university.”

“No because I am only going to be at university for another 6 months and then I will leave to find work.” Replied Hannah “I have until the summer holidays.”

Lucario had finished eating before Scar and Hannah. After they had all finished eating Lucario went outside into the cold night to do his night duties on the airfield. Scar and Hannah stayed inside and watched some TV. Lucario had always thought when would Scar and Hannah get engaged and now the time had come. Lucario walked over to one of the manholes to go down the underground hanger bays. When he got inside he was greeted by the sergeant and he guided Lucario round to some of the aircraft he was going to look at tonight. The underground base was completely different to what it looked like on the outside. Underground it looked all rough and military like, unlike the mansion which was elegant and stylish. As Lucario came to one of the helicopters he had been sent to look at, he felt a presence in the room. Something was lurking in the shadows, something that shouldn’t be here. He knew he should check it out but he had to get on with what he was doing. It was strange because no one else seemed to notice it and all got on with their jobs. This presence only affected Lucario and he was surprised the alarms hadn’t been sounded yet. He feared it would be a long night down here.

Chapter 2 - Prepare for Departure

“Pssst, Lucario.” A voice whispered from the shadows. “Pssst, Lucario.”

Lucario used his telepathy to scare the voice but it didn’t work. Whoever this was, it was a human who couldn’t understand telepathy and didn’t use it. The voice disappeared and wasn’t seen again. It was now the morning and Lucario had to get out onto the airfield to greet the secretary of defence. He walked slowly towards the lift and entered it. He went back up into the mansion and was greeted by Scar and Hannah. Scar was wearing his uniform and Hannah was wearing her smart clothes. She wore a black skirt and tie and a white blouse. She also wore a black headband in her hair and had her hair tied back in a pony tail. Scar was wearing a navy blue army style uniform and also a lieutenant’s hat.

“I think you better go put your uniform on Lucario and was your face.” Scar said.

Lucario hadn’t noticed he had oil on his face and he raced upstairs to the bathroom. He quickly washed it off and ran to his bedroom to go put on his uniform. When he realised he couldn’t find it he quickly made himself look more presentable and then walked back downstairs. Luckily he didn’t need a uniform because he was a Pokémon and he was wearing his EUSDO badge.

“I couldn’t find my uniform so I am wearing my badge.” Lucario said

“That’s fine, Lucario.” Replied Scar

They all walked outside and onto the airfield and waited for the secretary of defence to arrive. He arrived pretty quickly and stepped out of the unmarked helicopter with an advisor and a bodyguard. They all walked towards Scar, Lucario and Hannah with purpose and greeted them all. They were all wearing a black outfit with a white shirt, although the body guard was wearing sunglasses. The bodyguard was well built and looked very strong and this completely contrasted the way the other two men looked. They were both tall and skinny and didn’t carry much muscle on their bodies. The advisor was carrying a briefcase, which had some important files inside.

“Lieutenant Scar, it is nice to meet you in person. I have heard many good things about you and this base.”

“Welcome secretary, this is my girlfriend Hannah and my companion and personal bodyguard Lucario. Let me show you around then we shall talk in my office.”

The secretary greeted them both then Scar directed him to the hanger where the lift shaft was situated. They all walked in and went down towards the hanger bays where Lucario was earlier this morning. They eventually reached the bottom of the shaft and stepped out into an underground hanger. The secretary was really impressed by the size of the underground base that he asked Scar to quickly walk him round the place. They walked through the whole base from the hangers, where they started, to the laboratories near the offices. When they had finished walking round the place they all congregated in Scar’s office.

“I love the fact that you cover up the base from the outside by hiding it underground and then scrambling any incoming radio waves that may find the base.” The secretary said.

“It was my idea but the base I worked on before was Starship Battleshark. I loved working there but it was difficult to maintain and keep in the air so I moved back onto the ground.” Scar replied

Lucario was watching something he saw in the distance out on the balcony. A woman wearing an assassin’s clothes jumped down of the balcony and then the alarms sounded and Scar got to his feet. Scar shouted some orders down the microphone and the security got to work. Two more security guards came into the office and one stayed with the secretary and his bodyguard and the other went with Scar.

“Lucario search the base, I want this person found. They cannot get away!” Scar shouted back to Lucario.

“I will find them, Scar.” Lucario replied, trying to shout over the sounds of the alarms.

Lucario jumped down over the balcony, and when he landed he picked up a pistol, from one of the desks in the hanger bay, and loaded it. He realised that it was a big drop from the balcony to the floor of the hanger and admired how this woman managed to jump down that far without injuring herself. Lucario was okay because his legs were designed for large and tall jumps, so he could land with ease from great heights. Everywhere he looked he saw soldiers and security running in twos round the base looking for the woman. Lucario went where he felt the woman had gone but he wasn’t sure. He had to find her, the base’s location had been revealed and he couldn’t let her escape with the information. He followed two soldiers who walked right past an alcove in the wall but Lucario turned and noticed she was hiding in there. He pointed his pistol at her.

“Who are you?” Lucario asked, when he realised this wasn’t a woman; it was a girl in her teens. “Why are you here?”

The girl said nothing and took a dagger from her belt and lashed out at Lucario but she missed and Lucario fired a bullet into the wall above her. She was scared and lashed out again then tried to run away but Lucario held her still with his aura. She turned around and threw her dagger at Lucario. He just dodged the dagger and then attack with extreme speed and knocked the girl onto the floor. Two security guards came and arrested her. She was taken out into the open light and Lucario followed. Scar was waiting in the middle of the room and had an angry look upon his face. The girl didn’t struggle and kept her hood over her face. Lucario walked over to her and lifted the hood; he was right about it being girl in her teens.

“Bethany?!” Hannah said, very surprised it was someone she knew.

“You know her?” Lucario asked.

“Yes, I do. She is Charlotte’s sister. Charlotte is my best friend at uni.”

“So what the hell is she doing here then?” Scar asked.

“I came here because I wanted to kill you both, you and Hannah. You killed my father and you should pay the price.”

“You mean, Carl or Carlos should I say. He was a criminal and he had to be punished.” Lucario replied.

Scar bent to become face to face with the girl and she punched him in the face and sent him backwards onto the floor. Hannah helped him up.

“You are under arrest for attempted murder and assault. Go call the authorities.” Scar said.

She was escorted out of the base and outside. Scar and Lucario joined the secretary back upstairs in the office. Hannah was already waiting there for them.

“You dealt with that very well, Scar and Lucario. I was getting worried that I might have to close this place, which would be a shame.”

“I thank you for the compliment, secretary.” Scar replied

“I think I have seen enough and I will be leaving now, thanks for being what I would expect of a lieutenant in your position.”
The secretary got up and walked out of the office with purpose, like he did when he came off the helicopter. They all walked out onto the airfield and the secretary got into the helicopter and they flew away.

“I suppose I better get ready to go tomorrow morning then.” Lucario said

“Yes I think you should.”

Scar walked over to the two police cars with Hannah and Lucario walked in the opposite direction down towards the hanger bays again. He watched as Scar and Hannah talked to the police officers and told them about the incident. They agreed that she had attempted to kill Scar and she was officially arrested. Lucario thought about how she attacked him and thought he would have worse to come.
