So I am curious, does return still work on friendliness, or is it affection now? I mean aren't they kinda the same thing? I am having some trouble grasping the concept.

Affection gives bonus to in-game battles like they can dodge attacks easier now,etc. Doesn't really do much to you.
Friendliness is still the same as always
