I had the game months ago but sold it I regretted it and bought another copy im stuck and can't even beat the 7th gym my highest pokemon is only a level 38 I tryed training but it takes me forever to gain any exp.

pick two pokemon and have a wide range of moves with those two and only train those two. you will get more exp if you only use two pokemon. when you reach the elite four all you will need is those two pokemon.
pokemon #1 Shiny gyarados - thunderbolt - flamethrower - ice beam - surf
pokemon #2 Primape - (close combat or cross chop) - aerial ace - earthquake - poison jab
pokemon #3 Starter pokemon - its junk so dont bother training it
pokemon #3 Something that can learn fly - dont train
pokemon #4 Something that can learn strength, rock smash and rock climb- dont train
pokemon #5 Something that can learn waterfall and whirlpool - dont train

Go for SuperEffective/STAB. Done.
